We have our winners! Many thanks to everyone who submitted their prose to our Worth Your Salt: A Fiction Contest last month. Our esteemed judges, David Oppegaard (author of The Ragged Mountains) and Esther Porter (Revolver editor), have read them all and come to a decision:

Congratulations to Dana Langer, who snagged the top prize with her “Confessions of a Sixth Grade Siren” story!

We also have two runners-up:

“And The World Fell Asleep” by Eric Martell
“Surrogate” by Aleksander Sievert

All three winning submissions will be published here on the Hazel & Wren website in the coming weeks, be invited to read at the book launch for Jeff Smieding’s The Salt Machine on March 19th at Harriet Brewing in Minneapolis, and receive a literary gift basket chock full of greatness!

Said basket includes a free ebook copy of The Salt Machine, the entire Volume 1 of Thirty Two Magazine plus a gift subscription to Volume 2, a copy of Andy Sturdevant’s Potluck Supper with Meeting to Follow from Coffee House Press, a letterpress print from Hazel & Wren, a pocket notebook, a finger puppet (Yes, you read that correctly. A finger puppet.), and the best part: a pint of custom-flavored ice cream from Froz Broz. HOLY SMOKES. And to top it all off, the first prize winner also receives a $25 gift certificate to Common Good Books.

Look for the first story, “And The World Fell Asleep” by Eric Martell, here on Hazel & Wren this Friday, February 28th!

P.S.  Special thanks to our friends at Red Sofa Books, Common Good Books, Thirty Two Magazine, Coffee House Press, and Froz Broz for their help in making these gift baskets the. greatest. things.

Help!

We’re looking for some additional help here at Hazel & Wren. Our work has outgrown our current capacity, so we are in need of some additional staff members to join the Hazel & Wren team.

Looking for a way to get more involved in the literary community? Well, by golly, we’re looking for help from someone like you!

First things first: Hazel & Wren is an all-volunteer organization, so these are all unpaid positions. Depending on the position, a member of the Hazel & Wren team could spend an average of five hours per week on H&W stuff, although sometimes events and other projects push it to more. Click the links below to see the details for each available position. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us at hello@hazelandwren.com.

Current open positions:

Communications Associate  (1 position available)

Editorial Contributor  (2 positions available)

We’ll currently be reviewing applications until Monday, September 23rd, and will contact potential candidates for interviews (in-person if local, by phone if not) shortly thereafter. Spread the word!
