Three Things: Missed Connections Edition

2012 April 9

Every once in a while, when I’m on the prowl for inspiration, I visit the Missed Connections section on Craigslist. Posts usually range from idiotic to desperate to hopelessly treacle, but every once in a while, there’s a gem to be found: a sweet, self-effacing recounting of a single moment, a simple memory of days long past, or a single sentence loaded with mystery and intrigue. When I come across such keepers, I stow them away in my “save for later” vault of ideas.

This week, I’ve dug through the vault and pulled out three, each paired with an image, just for you.

Ridley Scott, from his short film, Boy and Bicycle, 1965. Featuring Tony Scott as “The Schoolboy.”

Colin Blakely, The Seeming Impenetrability of the Space Between, from Somewhere in Middle America series, circa 2006. Photograph. www.colinblakely.com

Yury Pimenov, Waiting, 1959. Oil on canvas. Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow.

Psst: It’s Open Mic this week! Submit your work-in-progress before Tuesday night for feedback from your fellow writers on Wednesday!
